Erich von Falkenhayn, who directed the German Army's General Staff from 1914 to 1916, sits for this portrait, which was issued by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied photographs to newspapers. Falkenhayn is best remembered for ordering the 1916 assault on Verdun, a battle meant to wear down the French army that dragged on for most of that year. The caption card gives no date, so the picture is best read against the wartime years when his name was in the headlines. Bain's pictures were widely reproduced, which helps explain why this image has survived in the Library of Congress.
