This picture is a portrait of the German legal scholar Rudolf von Jhering, reproduced as a halftone from an earlier photoprint. It served as the frontispiece of a published collection of his letters to friends, so it was meant to introduce his personal correspondence rather than stand alone. Jhering (1818–1892) taught law at several German universities and is remembered for *Der Kampf ums Recht*, which argued that people must actively defend their legal rights. The caption card gives no date for the original photograph.
