This cartoon's joke is the anachronism: a caveman riding a wheel, a notion that would have puzzled the people it depicts. The "B.C." in the title points to the prehistoric setting of Johnny Hart's comic strip, which began in 1958 and often built its gags on modern objects turning up in the Stone Age. Its catalog subjects also include manholes and unicycles, both everyday urban sights in 1970. The drawing is ink over pencil, reproduced with a halftone screen, a reminder of how newspaper and magazine cartoons were made and printed before digital tools.
