Harrison Forman, an American photographer and journalist then working in China, appears here at work with his camera among the Jews of Kaifeng, a city in Henan Province. The community traces its presence there to medieval times, when Jewish traders reached the Song-dynasty capital, and by the 1930s it was a small, largely assimilated group that drew outside attention. This halftone reproduction of a photoprint ran in the *China Journal* in September 1938, so it records both the community and how foreign observers chose to document it. The details come from a caption card and have not been independently verified.
