Leland Harrison, who served as the American minister in Bern for much of the Second World War, is the subject of this portrait. It is a photoprint by Alfred Rohrer, a photographer based in the Swiss capital. The record dates it only to a span between 1937 and 1949, and those details come from an unverified caption card, so the exact sitting date is uncertain. During Harrison's time in Switzerland, the neutral country was one of the few places where diplomats from opposing nations could still communicate, and the American legation there handled affairs for other governments.
