What sets this print apart is the handwritten dedication on its first page: "To Mrs. Joseph Pennell with kind regards of Charles G. Leland." Leland was an American humorist and writer who spent much of his life abroad, and he knew the Pennells, Joseph an illustrator and printmaker and Elizabeth a writer who worked closely with him. The plate itself is a page-numbered illustration from *La Cuisinière des ménages*, a French household cookbook, so the picture is an ordinary kitchen or domestic scene reproduced for its book. The record does not give a date, so the inscription and the Pennells' circle are the most useful clues to when and how the copy passed between them.
