This engraving is the title page of the second volume of Aubin-Louis Millin's *Peintures des vases antiques*, a work on painted ancient Greek and Etruscan vases. Its caption card records no date, but the book belongs to the early nineteenth century, when European collectors and scholars were just beginning to study painted pottery as a source for classical art and mythology. Millin, a French antiquarian, published engraved reproductions of vase scenes that gave readers far from the collections where the originals were kept a way to study them. The title page itself, with its lettering and classical ornament, shows how such books presented their material as serious scholarship.
