The name Jack Red Cloud sets this c1904 photoprint apart, though the identifying details come from an unverified caption card. The name points to the family of Red Cloud, the Oglala Lakota leader who fought U.S. forces along the Bozeman Trail in the 1860s before signing the 1868 treaty. Issued by the Gerhardt Sisters studio in St. Louis, the portrait reflects the popular market for studio images of Native sitters in the early twentieth century, when such photographs often circulated as souvenirs.
