Jack Red Cloud's name, as the caption gives it, connects this portrait to the Oglala Lakota leader Red Cloud, though the caption details have not been independently verified. The print was issued by the Gerhardt Sisters studio of St. Louis, a city that hosted the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition, when local studios likely sold portraits to large numbers of visitors. The catalog number 23 and the caption label "Indians" reflect how commercial studios of the period packaged Native sitters for popular sale, which is worth keeping in mind when reading the image.
