The title offers two possible names, Naches or Wei-chi-ti, but the record flags this information as unverified, drawn from a caption card that labels the subject only as "Indians." The print is a hand-colored photoprint, a technique that added painted tones to a photographic image and gave it a more decorative finish in the 1880s. Commercial portraits of Native people were widely produced and sold in this period, often shaped by a public that viewed them as curiosities, so the picture is best read with that context in mind. The copyright credit to A.F. Randall identifies the publisher behind the print.
