A pencil and Chinese white drawing on a small sheet of olive paper, this work shows George B. McClellan's arrival in Frederick, Maryland, in September 1862. The Union army entered the city in mid-September, shortly before the Battle of Antietam, after Confederate forces had withdrawn westward. Its record lists women, children, cavalry, and officers among its subjects, which suggests the scene centers on the civilian crowd that gathered to greet the troops. Frederick's residents were divided in their loyalties, so such welcomes carried mixed meaning in a border city. The drawing's light, quick handling captures a moment of public spectacle during the Maryland Campaign.
