Danbury, Connecticut, a small city known historically for its hat-making industry, is the subject of this lithograph, with its streets softened into a damp, hazy night. Martin Lewis, the Australian-born American printmaker, made his name with urban nocturnes in which rain, fog, and lamplight turn ordinary streets into atmospheric studies of light and shadow. The print is signed in pencil by the artist, and its date of about 1943 comes from a caption card, so it is not fully verified. Lewis's interest in quiet, overlooked corners of American towns is worth keeping in mind when looking at it.
