A winter night on Broadway is shown here as a color halftone reproduction of a drawing by Everett Shinn, printed across two facing pages (152 and 153) of *Harper's Weekly* for February 17, 1900. Shinn was one of the Ashcan School painters who turned to everyday city life in New York, and his scenes of streets, theaters, and crowds were a regular feature of the illustrated magazines of the day. Because the magazine reproduced his work through halftone printing, the picture reflects how urban illustration reached a broad readership before photographs were routinely printed in periodicals. The record's date and page details come from a caption card and have not been independently verified.
