Titled "Boney hatching a bulletin," this 1812 etching by George Cruikshank takes aim at Napoleon Bonaparte, whom British satirists often called "Boney." The December date places it just as the French army's retreat from Moscow had become a disaster in the Russian winter, and Napoleon had left his troops to return to Paris. The "bulletin" in the title refers to the official reports he issued to the French public, which tried to present the defeat as a sensible move. Cruikshank, one of Britain's most prolific caricaturists, used the sarcastic phrase "snug winter quarters" to mock that spin.
