Napoleon's wartime quarters at Osterode set this picture apart, a town he used as a base during his winter 1806 to 1807 campaign against Prussia and Russia. The record places the town in the Harz region of Germany, but the headquarters Napoleon occupied were in Osterode in East Prussia, now Ostróda in Poland, so the title may be a cataloguing slip. The wood engraving appeared in *Harper's New Monthly Magazine* in 1853, and its engraver, J.W. Orr, worked in New York, a reminder that American periodicals of the period often drew on European history for their readers.
