This chromolithograph takes its name from a racing term: a horse that wins "by a head" crosses the line only a nose or so ahead of its rival, and the title suggests the moment of that razor-thin finish. Published in New York by Currier & Ives around 1892 and signed by the artist John Cameron, it belongs to the firm's long run of sporting and racing scenes, which were popular with a public that followed horse racing and trotting closely. Color chromolithographs like this one were built up from several stone plates, each printed in a separate hue, and the firm's catalog of its prints lists it as number 2991.
