James Baldwin, the novelist and essayist, is the subject here, shown in a portrait from around 1979 by the photographer Max Petrus. The caption refers to Baldwin's novel "Just Above My Head," published in 1979, a sprawling work that traces two brothers, a gospel singer and his family across decades of Black life in America. By that point Baldwin had long been established as a major voice on race, sexuality and religion, with books such as "Go Tell It on the Mountain" and "The Fire Next Time" behind him. The print is a useful record of how writers of his generation were photographed as public intellectuals in the late 1970s.
