Here Jonathan Walker stands fixed in the pillory at Pensacola, Florida, the moment the engraving captures from his public punishment. Walker, a sailor from Massachusetts, had tried in 1844 to carry enslaved people by boat toward freedom, and his capture led to a trial, a fine, imprisonment, and the humiliation of the pillory. Antislavery printers in Boston issued this image in 1845 as an illustration in an account of his case, and they used his suffering to rouse sympathy for abolition. The engraving is worth studying for how it turns a single courtroom sentence into a public spectacle meant to shame the state that imposed it.
