The Sert Room, a dining room in the Waldorf-Astoria, is distinguished by its large murals painted by the Catalan artist José María Sert, who was among the most sought-after muralists of the early twentieth century. The hotel's Park Avenue building had opened only a few years earlier, in 1931, and the room was part of its effort to present a lavish, modern interior to New York's social set. This October 1933 photograph records the decorative scheme as it appeared soon after completion, when the hotel was a showcase for Art Deco-era design and for the commissioned art that was becoming fashionable in American public buildings.
