Major General J.A. Mower appears here with his staff rather than alone, a reminder that a division commander depended on a circle of aides, clerks and orderlies to carry out his orders. Joseph A. Mower served in the Union army's Western Theater under William T. Sherman and was known among his contemporaries for an aggressive, hard-driving style in the field. The photograph dates from between 1861 and 1865, though this print was made later, as was common with wartime images that were copied and sold in quantity after the conflict. Group portraits like this one show how a headquarters was arranged and who surrounded a general in the field.
