Few pictures in the Göring collection show the Reichsmarschall in such a private light: on his 47th birthday, January 12, 1940, he holds his wife, Emmy, and daughter, Edda, close for the camera. Göring, then commander of the Luftwaffe and one of the most powerful men in Nazi Germany, kept a large photo archive of his public and personal life, and this print was filed in an album covering January through May 1940. The scene reflects the warm family image the regime cultivated in the early war years, and the album later came into American hands at the end of the war.
