Taken at Fort Flatters, a French military post in the Algerian Sahara, this portrait shows an elderly man posed with his fourteen-year-old wife, a pairing the original title presents with the blunt language of its era. The photograph was made by Capt. Merl LaVoy of Seattle for the American Red Cross, which was active across North Africa and the Near East after the First World War. It later entered the collection of Frank and Frances Carpenter, the American travel writers whose work documented everyday life in distant lands for American readers. The image is valued today as a record of how outside observers framed the people they photographed.
