Grant appears here in the saddle with a cigar clenched in his mouth, a detail that sets this image apart from the more formal, stiff-collared likenesses of the general that circulated widely in his day. The picture is a photographic reproduction of a painting by C.W. Reed, made sometime between 1900 and 1950, when printed copies of portraits and battle scenes from the Civil War were popular in homes and schools. Grant, who led Union armies to victory before serving as president from 1869 to 1877, was famous for his tobacco habit, and images like this one helped fix his informal, unpretentious public character.
