A large tarpon stands upright on its tail in this photograph, which the caption card dates to about 1926, when the silver game fish drew sportsmen to Florida's Gulf coast. Venice, Florida, was one of the places where anglers pursued tarpon, and the Venice Tarpon Club registered the copyright for this print, made by a photographer named Koons. Tarpon are known for leaping and thrashing when hooked, so a fish captured in such a dramatic pose was a fitting subject. The record data is unverified, so the exact date and details should be read with that caveat in mind.
