Carinhall, Hermann Göring's hunting estate north of Berlin near Templin, is the setting here, where Göring hosted Japanese Foreign Minister Yōsuke Matsuoka in late March 1941. Matsuoka was on a visit to Germany that spring, a few months after Japan, Germany, and Italy signed the Tripartite Pact, and the group portrait includes Japanese Ambassador Hiroshi Oshima, a key figure in German-Japanese relations. The estate was named for Göring's first wife, Carin, and its lavish interiors were built to impress foreign guests. The caption record is based on older, partly unverified notes, so the exact roster of people shown should be checked against other sources.
