Mr. Golightly, the title figure, is shown setting off for California on a rocket, a joke about how quickly a man might hope to get rich in the goldfields. The color lithograph dates to about 1849, the first full year after gold was found at Sutter's Mill drew tens of thousands of prospectors west. Cartoons like this one used exaggeration and quick humor to comment on the rush and the eagerness that drove it. The print carries a copyright line in the name of A. Donnely and belongs to the Bella C. Landauer collection of American prints.
