Titled "The clairvoyant's dream," this 1864 lithograph by G.W. Lascell turns its attention to journalism, one of the two subjects the record lists alongside the Civil War. Newspapers of the period were openly partisan, and cartoonists often used fantasy scenes, such as a seer's vision, to comment on rival editors and the stories they printed. Lithographs were cheap to reproduce and sold in large numbers, so prints like this one reached readers far beyond the cities where they were made. Its date places it during the 1864 presidential campaign, when wartime politics ran through the nation's print culture.
