This photograph records a pageant drawn from Shakespeare's *A Midsummer Night's Dream*, with the performers' masks as the visible focus of the record. Outdoor pageants of this kind were popular in the United States from the 1890s through the 1930s, when local clubs, schools and civic groups staged scenes from literature and history with elaborate costumes. The image comes from Underwood & Underwood, a firm best known for stereographs and photographs sold in large numbers to the public. Its studio's copyright notice places the print in the commercial trade of its day, which makes it useful for seeing how amateur theatrical events were presented to a wide audience.
