Unlike the town views on this board, this print records a community pageant: the Pageant of Peterborough, New Hampshire, staged around 1910 with local residents performing scenes from the town's past. Its copyright credit to the MacDowell Memorial Association links it to the MacDowell Colony, the artists' retreat established in Peterborough after the composer Edward MacDowell died in 1908. The pageant's text was written by the poet Percy MacKaye. Pageants like this were popular across New England in the early twentieth century, when towns turned local history into public theater, and this print preserves one such moment of civic performance.
