Yebichai prayer, E" captures a Navajo Yeibichai, a healing ceremony in which masked dancers impersonate the Yei, the holy spirits called on to restore health and harmony. The record dates the print to about 1906 and notes a U.S. Copyright Office registration, which suggests it was produced for wider circulation during a period when photographers were recording Native ceremonies for a non-Native public. Images like this were made by outsiders with cameras, so they show costume, setting, and gathering with more certainty than they reveal the ceremony's sacred meaning. Viewers today often weigh what the picture preserves against what it could not capture.
