Rather than a named person or event, this print shows an alchemist at work inside his laboratory, a subject that drew Dutch painters in the mid-seventeenth century. The original painting is by Thomas Wijck, a Haarlem artist known for workshop and alchemist scenes, and it hangs in the Gemäldegalerie in Dresden. This 1902 photographic reproduction was issued by the Munich publisher V.A. Bruckmann, one of several firms that made painting reproductions for art-minded buyers around 1900. Today it offers a window onto how that era pictured alchemy, a practice that mixed early chemistry with mysticism.
