The poster's slogan, "Our boys need sox, knit your bit," with its old-fashioned spelling of "socks," asks ordinary households to take up knitting as a way to support the troops. Printed in New York by the American Lithographic Co., it likely dates to around 1918, near the end of the First World War, when the United States was sending large numbers of men overseas. Wool socks were a basic necessity for soldiers in muddy trenches and training camps, and the Red Cross and other volunteer groups organized women and children to knit them at home. The poster shows how the war effort reached into everyday domestic life, turning needlework into patriotic labor.
