Taken at 5:30 in the morning, this view follows a group of boys on their way to the Hill Manufacturing Company in Lewiston, Maine. The original caption card records that the photographer saw them at work inside the mill, a note that ties the street scene to the labor that followed. The picture is attributed to Lewis Hine, who documented child labor in New England for the National Child Labor Committee, and it dates to April 1909. Lewiston's cotton mills along the Androscoggin River made it one of the region's busiest industrial towns, and the early hour shows how long a young worker's day could begin.
