A Currier & Ives lithograph from 1864, this print takes aim at George B. McClellan by pairing him with the gunboat *Galena*, a Union steamer that fired on Confederate positions during the fighting at Malvern Hill in Virginia in July 1862. The record notes that the print was probably drawn by Louis Maurer, a German-born artist who produced many of the firm's cartoons. The title, "The gunboat candidate," points to McClellan's 1864 run for the presidency as the Democratic nominee, when opponents often used his wartime record against him. Viewers today can see how 1864 political cartoons used military episodes to argue about leadership and credit.
