Denny Hill, the wooded rise north of downtown Seattle that gave its name to the later Denny Regrade, is the subject here, and the title signals that the city was planning to take it down. Between about 1898 and 1931, crews cut the hill away with steam shovels and hydraulic jets, washing the material into Elliott Bay and creating flat land for new streets and buildings. Asahel Curtis, a Seattle photographer known for documenting the city and the region, recorded the work around 1910 or 1911, when the project was well underway. The picture is a useful record of how the city reshaped its own terrain to suit the real estate boom of the period.
