Titled with the American idiom "Going the whole hog," meaning to commit fully to a course, this 1837 lithograph takes aim at Martin Van Buren, the New York Democrat who took office as president in March of that year. The record also lists Tammany Hall, the Democratic political organization in New York City, and state and local elections, which ties the satire to the city's machine politics. H.R. Robinson, a New York printer and publisher of political lithographs, issued it, and it reflects the heated partisan contests of the Jacksonian era. It was printed the same year the Panic of 1837 struck, shortly after Van Buren's inauguration, and the economic crisis would dominate his presidency.
