The title points to Martin Van Buren, whose admirers called him the "Little Magician" for his skill at political maneuvering. Published in New York in 1844, the lithograph appeared during a bitter presidential contest. Van Buren lost the Democratic nomination to James K. Polk, with George M. Dallas as running mate, and then drew support from the Equal Rights Party. The print also names Andrew Jackson, Van Buren's longtime patron, and the Second Seminole War in Florida, which had only recently wound down.
