Few of Whistler's figure lithographs center on a model simply reading, which sets this 1890 print apart from the studio nudes that dominate his work on stone. Whistler signed it with his butterfly device, both on the stone and in pencil, a mark he used in place of a conventional signature on many prints. Cataloged as Way 29 after the Thomas Way listing of Whistler's lithographs, it survives from an edition of 25, and it shows how he turned the quiet of an artist's studio into a study of light, pose, and stillness.
