John Sloan's "Nude Reading" is an etching from 1928, one of the printmaker's studies of a seated nude absorbed in a book, a subject he returned to often in his later years. The print survives in an edition of 100 and is signed on the plate and in pencil, marking it as one of the impressions Sloan approved. Sloan, long associated with the Ashcan School of urban realism in New York, turned to etching in his later career, and his intimate interior scenes of this kind show his attention to quiet domestic life. The watermark on the paper, from the Dutch maker Van Gelder Zonen, is a detail worth noticing for anyone tracing how fine printing papers were sourced.
