Copyrighted by the Los Angeles photographer George Steckel, this c1896 photoprint shows the Polish pianist Ignace Jan Paderewski, whose concert tours drew large crowds across the United States in the 1890s. The caption card links the picture to railroad cars, which would fit the long train journeys that shaped his American career, though that detail is unverified. Paderewski was one of the most celebrated musicians of his era and later served as Poland's prime minister in 1919, a role that made him a national figure well beyond the concert hall.
