Edward Beal McLean, the son of Cincinnati Enquirer and Washington Post owner John R. McLean, is shown here as a young man in the years before he took over the family's newspaper interests. The record dates the portrait only to a span between about 1910 and 1920, and the photographic studio named on it, Fred Hess & Son, is the chief clue to how it was made. McLean later became known for his social circle in Washington, for his friendship with President Warren G. Harding, and for his marriage to Evalyn Walsh McLean, whose papers and collection hold this print.
