The sitter is Edward Sheldon, the playwright, in a portrait the record dates to about 1914. By then Sheldon was a prominent name on the New York stage, known for *Salvation Nell* and *Romance*. The photographer, Pirie MacDonald, ran a New York studio that became known for portraits of men from the theater, business, and society, and he registered this print for copyright. The date and identification come from an unverified caption card, so treat them as provisional.
