Edward Hawke, the 1st Baron Hawke (1705-1781), is the subject of this engraving, an unusual portrait of a naval commander rather than a scene of battle. Hawke rose to prominence in the Royal Navy during the Seven Years' War, most famously for his victory over the French fleet at Quiberon Bay in November 1759, which helped end French plans for an invasion of Britain. Engraved portraits like this one circulated widely in the eighteenth century, so they offer a useful view of how a commander's public image was shaped for a home audience. The caption card gives no date for this print, so its exact publication history remains uncertain.
