Titus Oates, the English clergyman shown in this engraving, is remembered chiefly as the man who invented the so-called Popish Plot in 1678, a fabricated claim of a Catholic conspiracy against Charles II that led to the execution of many innocent people. His lies eventually unraveled, and in 1685 he was convicted of perjury, flogged, pilloried, and imprisoned, remaining in custody until 1689. The print itself is undated, and its caption card's partial note about prisons may refer to his confinement, so the image is best read as a later record of a man whose notoriety outlasted his power.
