Death addresses a queen in this engraving, whose German caption reads "Frau Königin! euer Freud ist aus," or "Lady Queen, your joy is over." The hand coloring gives the figures a bright, theatrical finish that contrasts with the grim message. The scene belongs to the Dance of Death tradition, which began in late medieval Europe and paired figures from every rank of society with skeletal Death, who summons each to the grave regardless of status. Engravings like this one were reissued and copied for centuries, so the caption's verse and the sharp social satire about rank and mortality are worth reading closely. The print's date is not recorded, and its attribution to "Chovin" appears only as a signature on the plate.
