This photograph shows Glenn Morris of the United States, the winner of the decathlon at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. The caption card describes him as setting a new world record, though the point total it gives looks like a transcription error, since Morris's score was well above the figure printed there. The image comes from *XI Olympiade, Berlin 1936*, an album of photographs by Leni Riefenstahl, who was also directing the official film of the Games. The decathlon, a two-day contest of ten track and field events, was one of the most closely watched competitions in Berlin, and Riefenstahl's stills capture the athletes' concentration and physical form.
