Richard Crooks, the American operatic tenor pictured here, was born Alexander Richard Crooks in 1900 and joined the Metropolitan Opera company in 1933, the year this portrait was made. The photograph is by Pirie MacDonald, a Manhattan studio portraitist known for formal studio work of prominent sitters in the early twentieth century. Its caption card is marked as unverified, so the exact sitting date and circumstances are not confirmed, but the image offers a clear record of how a rising concert and opera singer was presented to the public in the early 1930s.
