This portrait of Richard Lemon Lander serves as the frontispiece to *Clapperton's Last Expedition*, the account of Hugh Clapperton's second journey into West Africa that Lander edited and published in 1830. Lander had served as Clapperton's servant and companion on that expedition, which ended with Clapperton's death in 1827, and he returned to England to tell the story. Lander later went back to Africa and, with his brother John, helped establish the course of the Niger River before dying of wounds from an attack in 1834. The record does not give a date for the print, so it is best read as an illustration from the book rather than a dated likeness.
