This engraving comes from an 1833 memoir of Zerah Colburn, the Vermont-born boy whose ability to solve complicated arithmetic in his head drew crowds across America and Europe in the 1810s and 1820s. Colburn, born in 1804, was presented as a rare natural talent, and audiences and scholars often tested him with problems meant to stump him. By 1833 he was a grown man, and the memoir recast his early fame as a story about education, character and the limits of a prodigy's reputation. The print is a useful reminder of how 19th-century readers were drawn to stories of extraordinary young minds.
