Bethel, Connecticut, is the town where P.T. Barnum was born in 1810, and this view shows the house that marks his beginnings. Barnum later built the American Museum in New York and, with partners, the traveling circus that carried his name across the country. The picture is a photographic copy of a wood engraving by Sears, a common way 19th-century illustrations were reproduced and circulated. The caption card gives no date, so the copy's exact age is uncertain.
